What Is Car Talk, and What Is It Not?

Radio car show

Most people could not name a radio car show even if it meant winning a great cash prize. That is, not unless they were a fan of Car Talk Radio. As far as radio car shows go, there are few if any that take automotive radio to a place where the average person can enjoy it, but Car Talk is one of those programs. Before the brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi retired, the show had approximately 4 million listeners. Before you decide that Car Talk is exactly what you have been missing in your life, there is a little bit more that you need to know.

It is not a car show radio program along the lines of a typical car show. Tom and Ray, also known as Click and Clack, do not talk about the newest cars that are coming out, or whether the Porsche is better than the Ferrari. This is not where they purposely debate the finer points of one car make and model over another. This show is about problems listeners are having with their cars, and what Tom and Ray can do either to help that listener, or in some cases make it worse.

It is not automotive radio made just for mechanics, either. While the hosts do talk about car problems, and car parts, they do an exemplary job of explaining those concepts in simple terms. Auto mechanics would do well to listen to the show, but they are certainly not the target audience. The target audience is, essentially, you, or anyone with car troubles just looking to not get ripped off at a mechanic. There are also a number of callers that want to know if their particular car trouble is safe to ignore or not.

Car Talk is an auto radio program that is helpful, humorous, and unique. Each program is also marked by a new “Puzzler,” which is a small competition based around a car-themed mystery. In some episodes, Tom and Ray callback individuals that they had formerly given advice to, to see if the advice was helpful or not.

If you want a radio car show that is completely out of the ordinary, then the Car Talk Radio show is a great option. Even though it is no longer in production, reruns are still available on the radio, as are podcasts. Their website is also still updated, and is a great resource for anyone looking for a mechanic, more Car Talk information, or a forum for car troubles affecting their specific make and model.
